The Coming Break up of the USA
by Phil Hall
Mexico, not the UK, not Canada, not Germany, not China, is the USA’s most important partner: its most important trading partner to the fertile south with a border thousands of kilometres long. And 50% of Mexican territory now forms the southern half of the United States, with all the folding in of Mexican culture that that implies.
The Americans monitor Mexico closely. They have a lot of people spying on everyone there and US forces do their best to keep Mexico in a state of relative chaos and corruption; with the help of Mexico’s criminal/governing class. This makes Mexico more amenable, though not amenable enough to control it. Mexico still owns its own petroleum resources and beaches and the USA hasn’t invaded Baja California.
Remembering, of course, that it’s Walmart that makes the money, not the producers; the distributor makes the super profits from the drug trade, not the supplier. The biggest mafia of all, the drug mafia, is in the United States. Francis Ford Coppola explained it in The Godfather Part II. Kennedy was a son of bootlegging mafiosi. Donnie is the capo di tutti capi, and the CIA is in bed with the Sinaloa cartel, and has a controlling share in other cartels. Call it vertical integration.
We think, with our transatlanticism and shared language, that the UK is the United States favourite partner in crime. But in reality, and literally, Mexico is joined to the USA at the hip. Mexico is married to the United States. Moreover, there are 38 million people of Mexican descent who live in the USA, not to mention all of those other people who have a whiff of Mexico about them. In total 50 million.

Remember also that Mexican Spanish (without the lisp) is the USA’s second language, and that, while people there may eat things like cheddar cheese, they have no idea what Marmite is, or Piccalilli, or what any number of English and British sauces and condiments are. Scratch any Texan (even someone from New York) and you’ll find an expert on Mexican cuisine; if they have had even the faintest kind of association with Mexico, or possess a smidgen of culture.
Still, the British are important in the USA as long-term investors and settlers. Starting with the British colony in Jamestown, when Shakespeare was still alive, and then the Pilgrim Fathers – and so on – continuing to this day, the UK has exported both its people and its riches to the Americas, setting up plantations and farms and factories.
Once the American slaving colony became independent, declaring a Rhodesian-style Universal Declaration of Independence, the British continued to invest in America and to emigrate there. And if those people were very rich, they established bases in both countries. The riches produced by the British Empire flowed into London, but then they flowed out again, to be invested in places like Canada, Australia and the USA. It didn’t matter that the USA was no longer a colony; by then the British preferred neo-colonialism anyway. The British controlled most of Latin America, the USA did not.
Even when the Monroe Doctrine was en vigor, the British were the dominant foreign power in South America: in Argentina, in Chile, in Uruguay, in Paraguay, in Bolivia, in Peru, right up to Central America. Even there, in Central America, the British had Belize and investments in Mexico.
One thing few Europeans understand properly is that Mexico is a culture that goes back to 2000 years BC. Mexico was multi-civilisation, consisting of at least 64 different nations, speaking at least 64 different languages. Mexico evolved in all its astounding complexity; it is the fourth most biodiverse nation on Earth with a wide variety of terrains and ecosystems. It has jungles, temperate forests and deserts, and stretches 3000 km from the north to the south. From the north of Scotland to the tip of Spain near Gibraltar is the same distance. Mexico’s ties to Spain and France (the French tried to conquer) mean that the country has been connected intimately to the culture, and intellectual achievements of Europe for more than five centuries.
Mexico had its revolution in 1910, seven years before the Soviet Union, and it was a famous destination for exiled anti-fascists (Argentina the preferred destination for fascists). Mexico, a deeply religious pre-Hispanic collection of nations, had a shared culture that promoted intense bravery. It became homogeneously Catholic. Mexico City had one of the oldest universities in the world, and great cathedrals substituted, replaced, or sat upon New Spain’s pyramids.
I say all of this because I want you to understand that the social fabric of Mexico, whatever you read in the news, is astoundingly strong, and that any outside influences that reach into Mexico are eventually incorporated into it. Despite the current perilous state Mexico is in, it is a resilient society that has survived conquest and wars.
Mexico’s culture overpowers fragmented US culture, and travels north, together with its people and its flavours, its products and Mexico’s worship of bravery. The American visionary, Robert Pirsig, examined the soul of his country and found that the cowboy and the native American shared the same values: taciturnity, stoicism, rootedness, bravery and nonchalant violence.
Pirsig forgot to say that cowboy culture was Mexican vaquero culture with the etymology to prove it: buckaroo, bronco, cinch, calaboose, desperado, lariat, lasso, mustang, savvy, stampede, ranch, corral, hacienda, sombrero, coyote. Mexican vaquero culture is mestizo in its roots.
Is it wrong to say one culture is more powerful than another?
The culture of the United States of America, in contrast, is a quilt of sewn-together scraps. The quilt is the quintessential American cloth. Joseph Campbell described American religion as an embroidered patchwork of choice. The fabric of the American quilt tears so easily at the joins between these patches.

Or, perhaps, a mandala would be a better description of the USA. The centres, the great cities are whirling hubcaps.
In its cities the USA is well integrated, but not so in its the interior. With successive migrations of the worst cynics and the best idealists and utopians of Europe, with its communities of Mormons and Quakers and Mennonites, with its Calvinists and Puritans and its Lutherans, and all the other European discontents and migrations from different parts of the world, the USA is formed of a shiny emulsion, not a solution; Its Africans, sometimes self-separating by embitterment; by their anger at a history of slavery. The USA has the unassimilated remanents of slaughtered indigenous peoples hived off into reservations.
If you study American dialects you realise that there are far fewer dialects of English in the USA than there are in the UK, which has a population less than one fifth the size of America. In a single town in England, you can have two or three or more dialects. If you see the play by Bernard Shaw, Pygmalion, or watch the screen adaptation, My Fair Lady, you hear the character Henry Higgins boast that he can tell the exact street someone comes from. The character of Henry Higgins was based was on that of a real person, the grammarian, Henry Sweet.

The Americans are mobile between cities, and that is where they mix, and the accent isn’t that different across the Midwest. People can just as easily live in LA, as they can in Chicago or New York.
When you think about the UK breaking up into parts or regions of England, separating off, it’s always said both in jest and anger, and it is true that there has been a Scottish independence referendum, but in the USA, the federal centre will find it very difficult to hold.
My own prediction is that the USA will break up into different independent regions, smaller and larger, not necessarily along state lines. Much as they’ve tried to destroy Europe as a rival in recent years, long before Europe is disunited, the colony will find itself Balkanised; hoisted on its own petard.
The only reason South Africa wasn’t Balkanised was because most of the population were rooted in that place in shared traditions. The only reason Germany unified, or Italy, was because they shared languages and they shared a common history and culture. But in America, very few people share anything much apart from what’s been imposed onto them by the federal government. And their Hollywood, and highways and cars, and music, and hamburgers and hotdogs. Much of the rest of their culture is on loan from Europe, especially from Britain.
If this were Robot Wars, I would place my bets on Mexico, a small, spinning, centrifugal country, dense – substantial, holding together. The USA is a large, disjointed, sprawling, creaking, plastic, gimcrack machine, a tin bonnet over a V12 engine. High powered, outgrown, gangly, uncoordinated.

If the United States is the big, stupid, blowhard creature with a small, scheming brain; a python swallowing more than it can eat becoming comatose, my prediction for it is that it will split open.
Mexicans have always seen the people of the north as uncultured barbarians, they called them (and still call them) the Chichimeca. The Gringos are the Chichimeca. If civil war, or ICE persecuting migrants, ever really got started, and internment camps were set up in great numbers, there would be another civil war and the immediate end to trumped up dreams of an empire in the western hemisphere, the tribute act to the British empire.
And that is what many of us expect to happen – unless some Napoleon or some Hitler rises in the USA; the shattering of the USA. And there are no Napoleons or Hitlers ready to take over in the USA, just cutthroat, warring cabals and their generals and colonels.
Certainly America, in its preening neoclassicism, built its monuments to Mammon. The USA is a society dedicated to Mammon, the god of the USA, syncretically in every other way, is the god of wealth and its high priest is Donald Trump and a man called ‘Fink’.
The god of lucre, the prophet of money, is Mithras. Mithras was and is the deity of the City of London. The City of London and New York worship the same God. Kenneth Clark observed this in the last programme of his classic programme Civilisation. This is the philosophy of pirates who come to understand that only way to acquire real treasure in one life time is to steal it.
The childish mid-lifers in the US intelligence community claimed they broke up a conspiracy against the United States. All of this thought up by some Disney scriptwriter / storyteller stringing for Langley. They tried to think up a name for a conspiracy. Not too Marxist, a little more filmic, epic! Another Symbionese Liberation Front, with a cobra symbol and Patty Hearst dressed in black, waving an assault rifle. Where is the Netflix movie?
The conspiracy they invented was called Turtle Island. And what is Turtle Island? It is Tortuga, the place where the pirates landed and had their base in the Americas. So, of course, this name refers exclusively to the USA’s ‘piratical’ foreign policy. Well, pull the other B movie leg, my young friend.
One of the things about the psychology of empire is this. Understand that, in the US they believe, in their heart of hearts, that power really does come from the barrel of a gun. In every film, in every movie, in every series, from cowboy and gangster movies onwards, almost every problem, and every solution, must come (unless you are a special friend of Woody Allen) from the barrel of a gun: bang, bang!
The problem is that shooting traumatises the shooters. America needs more sociopaths and psychopaths to solve its problems with bullets, and it is training them now in ICE. For the centre to hold the USA must become a tyranny. For the colonisers The Birth of a Nation mustn’t end in The Death of a Nation. A modern Ku Klux Klan must ride forth; in comes ICE to the rescue. All that’s missing from ICE are the burning torches, and white hats with badly torn eyeholes.
Israel has expressed a clear understanding of the reality of its situation and the need for constant war. If you are implanted somewhere artificially and have no other identity and nowhere else to go but the identity of being a coloniser and active complicity in land grabbing and genocide, then you must come to terms with the fact that, likewise: in order to survive as a nation in the USA you’ll have to continue to murder and steal and you will continue to need psychopaths. ICE and the IDF. As an unreconstructed and unapologetic descendent of colonisers, slavers, and exploiters, you will never live in harmony with anyone outside your gang.

The Symbionese Liberation Front’s Patty Hearst dressed in black, wearing and waving an assault rifle. Where is the Netflix style movie? Still shot Hibernia Bank’s CCTV system
If you are a coloniser you must own a gun in the USA or Israel. A gun makes sense if you’re living on a continent which still wants to spit you out; wants to expel you. This continent doesn’t belong to you if your ancestors stole and killed to get it. Not because it couldn’t have belonged to you; if your ancestors had settled and intermarried and integrated in the end (as the many of Spanish did from the beginning in Mexico) then you would be now at home. But they did not, and you don’t recant and so it’s off to Mars with you.
Like Lantana in Africa, Rabbits in Australia, and crayfish in the UK’s rivers, as a predatory outsider, as a destroyer of American nature and ecology, as a racist, as a priest of Mithras and Mammon, and a follower of the Christian wealth doctrine, you should reap what you’ve sown. If your truth is that you only exist in the USA by virtue of the violence and atrocities you and your descendants have committed.
Among you are the young people.
I think it was Jim Morrison who sang or recited something quite profound. Jim Morrison, like Robert Pirsig and Walt Whitman, was a prophet of America who foresaw its apocalypse and resurrection. The 1960s was the moment when the USA was partially redeemed through the counter culture movement, and one of its most inspired visionary redeemers was Jim.
When Jim was a boy, travelling along the highway, he saw an accident on the road, and six ‘Indians’ (Native Americans) were in the back of a pickup truck which had an accident and they died. He felt their souls entering his own and mixing with it…

Jim Morrison, like Robert Pirsig and Walt Whitman was a prophet of America who foresaw its apocalypse and resurrection.
Imagine those souls, the souls of those dead Chichimeca. Imagine the vengeance the dying Native Americans swore before they were killed during the colonisation of the USA. Imagine the destruction they wished on the invaders, and how they wished for some supernatural power to avenge them, for some god, some Great Spirit, to see justice done. The real American Superhero was not a New York immigrant Jew fantasising about killing Nazis, but Geronimo intending to destroy the colonisers.
When the native Americans appealed to God, the Great Spirit, for revenge and justice, they found emptiness; likewise, the people of Auschwitz heard no reply, neither did the people of Armenia, or the people of Palestine. God has not answered them.
What happened to this multi-millennial spirit desire for justice, of anger? Has it evaporated?
A friend of mine was born in Tasmania, and she has a road named after her in her town. When she was young, she walked towards the cliff tops alone through the green. Because she had a troubled childhood – her father was a quietly violent man who dived for abalone – she was often submersed in trance.
She was a little out of body as she wandered along the coastal path. As she walked she sensed a great crowd of native Tasmanian ghosts gathering around her. The Tasmanians were all killed and hunted down by the British colonisers long ago. She felt their presence and their ill-feeling. Perhaps she was imagining it. Perhaps not. She heard them whispering to her:
Jump, jump, jump, jump!
This is what happens to a land when it is colonised; to the rocks and plants and sky and the air flowing over, and the water running through and around it. The land stores up a vast reply of resentment like a battery. If an American, a descendant of colonisers, who shares the attitudes of the colonialists, wants to really get to grips with the spirit of the place, then they should watch The Amityville Horror or seek an an encounter with Judge Holden.
But the children into whose souls the spirits of native Americans have comfortably settled will write Hiawathas and Blades of Grass instead, and compose songs like Woody Guthrie’s.
When the Native Americans found a baby after one of their attacks on European settlements, they sometimes took pity and adopted those termite babies and brought them up. And they became real people. Remember the book and film: Little Big Man?
It is in the children with open minds and open hearts that the souls of the Native Americans will come to inhabit the USA again. Jim Morrison was an American prophet.
And so, back to the fictitious reality of the present and our reasonable expectations of disaster. After America disintegrates, and in the process destroys many people, and after it gets absorbed into the rest of the double continent, softly touching the north and south poles. After the sugar shards of the USA’s glassy fragments are dissolved like piloncillo in hot water, after Eurasia becomes Eurasia, and Asia becomes Asia, and Africa becomes Africa, and the world continues to evolve and fuse (barring black swan events, like the arrival of an alien spaceship arriving with malign intent).
After the coming New Dark Ages, a New Age will begin. Just as it has done so many times before after the fall of an empire. This can be predicted by anyone feeling forwards into the future. But what may rescue the USA from its doom is its tolerant, open minded, loving, hopeful young people, and its older people of conscience.
